Tips When Applying to Universities

Grade 12 is the last stage of every student in senior high school. While studying material for tests and doing assignments, they also have to start preparing all the documents and qualifications to apply to their choice of university.  This article is provided for students who are going through this phase. Here are 3 things to consider when applying to certain universities. 

Seeking details of the university is one of the top priorities for students who want to commence further education. Asking questions to university representatives at an educational fair is a great idea. Not only will you receive general knowledge of the place, but you can also obtain various crucial notes. Nevertheless, if students are not able to attend and ask them, searching through the internet is also possible. 

SCHOLARSHIPS & TUITION FEES

Subjects about which students have to mainly enquire are the necessary documents, accommodation, and undergraduate courses. Scholarships and tuition fees are the most substantial on the list.  These are two major key factors which make students decide whether to study at that the university or not. In this world, not all students have a strong financial background to carry on higher education at a university. That’s why numerous scholarships are offered to all future students who are planning to study there. For example, according to the official HKUST website, international students must have the transcript of their school report, personal statement, English qualification, and so forth. In addition, scholarships, such as BAAS scholarship, can be earned by some students who have shown that they are qualified.

FUTURE JOBS

Upon graduation, fresh graduates must have already had a plan about what their next step is. Before grade 12 students submit the form to their chosen university, they must contemplate the availability of job vacancies, internship opportunities, and the country’s economic stability. Sometimes certain occupations are not demanded by companies in some countries. This clearly prevents fresh graduate from being hired as full-time employee. Furthermore, getting an internship is vital to your working experience. Before applying to a university, it is suggested to check its surrounding area through internet whether internships are offered to undergraduate students. Lastly, a country’s economic stability of the university where students are going can affect their profession.  A country whose economy is unstable usually leads to unemployment, a downturn, or in extreme cases, a societal collapse.

Let’s take an example. After graduating from UNSW, which is one of the top-notch universities in Australia, fresh graduate can apply a position in multiple companies. According to Linkedin, data shows that approximately 120 companies in Sydney are actively hiring Data Analyst, whereas internship recruitment posts for that profession in Sydney are coming from around 100 enterprises. In addition, Australia has maintained a good growth performance for the past 20 years, currently sitting as the 13th country with the largest economy in the world. 

UNIVERSITY TYPES

Getting accepted to your favorite university certainly is a dream come true. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always go as hoped in reality. The acceptance rate of students to a famous and best university in the world is extremely low, especially if pupils are non-local. Hence, it’s better to apply to several universities which are categorized into 3 groups, namely reach, target, and safety schools. Each type should have 2 -3 universities which are going to be proposed.

In brief, a reach school is the applicant’s dream university which is extremely difficult and selective to get into. Universities which claimed to have acceptance rates below 10% such as Harvard, NUS, and Yale, are considered reach schools. Hereafter, a target school is a university in which applicants feel they are able to get accepted as long as they work hard for their grades. If students apply to this type, they will have a higher chance to receive an acceptance letter. Universities which are considered on the list are CityU, CUHK, and Ohio State University. Lastly, a safety school is a university which is easy to get into in most cases. According to a report conducted by Pew Research Center in 2019, the majority of universities which fall into this category will admit most applicants. Several examples of the universities are Keiser University, Cameron University, and Delta State University.

In conclusion, senior students have a lot of tasks which need to be done if they plan to enter a university. There are some matters that students should consider and look for which are detailed information about universities, future and long-term plans, as well as the number of types of universities they should apply to.
