Smukiez Theater Night, or synonymously known as STN, is an event that is held annually here at SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta. This event is the combined effort of our school music clubs, dance clubs, theater club, and choir. The music clubs include SYC (orchestra club), Cressendo (band club), Guitar Ensemble (guitar club), SEREN1TY (contemporary dance club), F1RST (modern dance club), MASK (theater club), and Smukiez Choir.
This year, Smukiez Theater Night presented an adaptation of the legend ‘Jaka Tarub dan 7 Bidadari’ titled ‘Janji’. It tells the story of the meeting between a villager whose strength and virtues could always be relied on, Jaka, and a beautiful angel, Nawang Wulan. This reliable villager then stole the angel’s mystical scarf which started a new chapter in both their lives.
We are part of MASK. Our preparations started in July, when we did a casting to decide the actors and actresses who were going to play the available roles in the drama. We did weekly training, starting with blocking, followed by memorizing lines, and finally, detailing for the scenes. As for appearances, we had prepared costumes and put on makeup right before the performance. Some costumes were rented, while some others were clothes the cast had already owned. 5 days before the event, we started joint rehearsals with the rest of the clubs. We needed to adapt and work out issues that arose from working together for the first time, such as colliding schedules and missed cues. We then had our last 2 rehearsals. The first one was held one day before the event, and the final one was held 8 hours before the start of the show.
On the day of the event, we had already brought everything we needed. Both crew and performers had to attend classes in the morning before continuing on with our final rehearsal at noon. Final preparations started at 1 p.m. when we were given time to eat, do our makeup, and prepare our costumes. We reassembled back at the school hall at 5 p.m. in the evening for the last briefing session.
The event started at 7 p.m., started off by Smukiez Youth Chamber and Guitar Ensemble. The audience was then given time to get ready before the main performance began, which was in the form of a musical play. The opening of the play featured a performance by our school’s modern dance club, F1RST. They were then followed by the rest of the performances which worked in conjunction. They were MASK, Smukiez Choir, and our school’s contemporary dance club, SEREN1TY. Smukiez Choir and SEREN1TY made their appearances in between MASK’s scenes. The event went on until 9 p.m. and was closed with a performance of the song “Berharap Tak Berpisah” by all of the performers altogether. The show was fantastic, and the audience looked satisfied.
We are incredibly grateful for having been given the opportunity to perform in an event as spectacular as Smukiez Theater Night. If you, dear readers, are curious as to what Smukiez Theater Night was like for us and the audience, keep looking forward to more information on next year’s Smukiez Theater Night on our instagram page @ smukiee. We await your participation in next year’s STN!
