In the past one to two years, we have been battling the deadly pandemic of Covid-19. Therefore, for safety measures, all teaching and learning activities were held online. But recently, the Indonesian government has announced that hybrid learning will ensue in schools as soon as possible starting off with a few including PENABUR Secondary Kelapa Gading. I was one of the students who got to go to school and experience hybrid learning. Hybrid learning means some students would go to school while the rest would continue school online as per usual. So, will hybrid learning be more effective than online learning?
It can be argued that hybrid learning is more effective than online learning alone. This is because when students come to school and learn in it, it becomes more interactive and when it’s interactive, students tend to be more intrigued or soaked up in the lesson. It was nice to meet some of my friends although only two of them came at that time. Being in school with other students in real life actually gave me a better way of learning. This is because online learning can make people feel more anxious to simply put it, whereas offline school gives you the chance to help or get help from a friend in answering simple questions. Furthermore, hybrid learning also introduces a more technologically advanced method of learning. This means that as a result, the idea of hybrid learning is actually beneficial.
On the other hand, hybrid learning won’t be as beneficial if all the things planned were to go in the wrong direction. When I was at school, almost half of the periods were used by teachers to learn how to use the smart whiteboard so both the students at home and school could see what the discussion was about. It was also quite hard to manage between the students at home and at school. Obviously, when all the teachers get more comfortable and adapt to the new teaching method, everything will run smoother, but it was very time-consuming nevertheless. Furthermore, although it is good as an idea, there might be a lack of self-control within the students. The students might want to go hug their friends when they actually have to keep their distance.
On the whole, it was a fairly nice experience to have finally come back to school and meet a couple of friends. It was kind of saddening to see the school being and feeling so empty. Maybe going back to school right now won’t be the best idea since the pandemic is still in its prime, but if the government had decided to do so, then it must be the right decision.
