SIS KG MUN 2023
On March 25-26 2023, we, members of the MUN club attended an MUN conference held by Singapore Intercultural School Kelapa Gading. We participated in 2 councils from the 5 councils available. Celine, Jessica, Jovanka, and Stephanie participated in the UNSC council, as for Cheryl and Chavela, they participated in the NATO council. By His grace, we were fortunate enough to be able to snatch 2 awards. Jovanka was awarded with Verbal Commendation, and Celine was awarded with Honorable Mention.
UNSC stands for United Nations Security Council and is regarded as a high political council in MUN, making it have a reputation of being a “difficult” council. In UNSC, the topic was regarding the territorial dispute between Israel and the Palestine region. The meeting started in a zoom call with around 20 participants representing their own elected countries.
For students in SMAK 1 who joined, Jovanka represented Australia, Celine represented Iran, Stephanie represented Iraq and Jessica represented Syria. We were all pretty nervous at first. We started doing roll-call one by one and afterwards, the conference officially started. For the first day in the first committee session, we started with our GSLs and motions from each country. After each committee session, we would have a 30 minutes to one hour break.
The second committee session started after the break, and we continued to discuss the motions on the floor. After another break, we started the third committee session. To our surprise, a shadow delegate (the delegate of Israel) came to join our discussion. In the middle of the endless debate between countries, we started on our DRs, and the delegate of Israel went out of the call sometime during the third committee session. On the second day, we spent all the committee sessions to explain our DRs, including the votings. Surprisingly this time, no DRs passed. With a lot of time left for us, the chairs and delegates had some fun with the gossip box. We also asked for feedback from the chairs so we can improve in the future.
NATO itself is a security alliance of 30 countries from North America and Europe. In this conference the topic that we discussed was NATO’s unbalanced dependency on the USA. On the first comses we mainly talked about the importance of the usa to nato while the second and third comses was used to form blocks and discuss about our solutions and our draft resolution. The second day, on comses four we started by clearing our stances a couple of misunderstandings from the previous day then proceeded to present our draft resolutions. The same was done for comses 5 we were also presenting our draft resolutions. For comses six we did a crisis which is mainly for fun.
Overall, this MUN competition is such an experience for us.
