HAPPY TEACHER’S DAY: A BRIEF HISTORY OF NATIONAL TEACHER’S DAY
ACHIEVEMENT - 26 November 2021
CIREBON, SMAK PENABUR – Every November 25th we celebrate National Teacher's Day (HGN). How is this date celebrated as National Teacher's Day? Here's the history.
The decision to choose the Teacher's Day is related to the establishment of the Indonesian Teachers Association or often abbreviated as PGRI. The teacher association organization has actually existed since the Dutch colonial era with a different name, namely the Dutch East Indies Teachers Association, known as PGHB. PGHB was formed in 1912 and became a forum for the struggle of teachers. The PGHB organization consists mostly of indigenous teachers who teach at the Sekolah Rakyat Angka 2 and the Village School. Members of this PGHB consist of auxiliary teachers, village teachers, school principals, and school owners.
Through PGHB, indigenous teachers tried to fight for their rights. At that time the indigenous teachers felt that there was a difference between the indigenous teachers and the teachers from the Netherlands. Indigenous teachers wanted a similar position between fellow teachers, both natives and the Dutch.
This organization changed its name to the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGI) in 1932. Unfortunately, PGI did not operate for a long time, because during the Japanese colonial period this organization was forced to stop. During the Japanese occupation all types of organizations were prohibited from operating, including PGI.
After PGI had stopped, members of this organization regrouped after Indonesia declared independence on 17 August 1945. These teachers gathered in an Indonesian Teachers' Congress on 24-25 November 1945 in Surakarta. During the congress, PGRI was formed which until now has become a forum for all teachers in Indonesia.
After the formation of PGRI, the government issued Presidential Decree No. 78 of 1994 to determine the date of establishment of PGRI.
On the same date the government also declared it as National Teacher's Day.
That was a brief history of the birth of National Teacher's Day.
An advanced nation is a nation that makes quality education as its basis. And it cannot be separated from the role of teachers.
Let's advance our national education by appreciating the services of teachers and of course carrying out the good things that have been taught.
Happy Teacher’s Day!
