2024 PARIS OLYMPICS

Throughout the City of Light, Paris vibrates with the energy—now known to the world—of the 2024 Summer Olympics. The city is no longer just a place holding grand pieces of history, it also tells a vibrant tale of athleticism, culture, and international camaraderie. This year, with the theme "Games for a New World," the Olympics once again bring humans together on a global platform to showcase talent and unity.
The opening ceremony was a breathtaking celebration, combining Parisian vibes with competitive excitement. From the parade of thousands of smiling, waving athletes from around the world, everything spoke to the same excitement that knows no borders. Events from track and field to gymnastics, and the new Olympic sports like surfing, have been captivating both audiences in the stadiums and those at home.
Yet, with all this joy and spectacle, one could hardly ignore the many backlashes that the Paris 2024 Olympics has received. Among these major issues has been the environment. The Olympics had been planned to be sustainable, say critics, but new venues and infrastructure have thrown a big question mark at the long-term ecological footprint. The use of resources, has been drawing protests and debate, thus taking away the festive feel.
Another point of contention has regarded the cost of the Olympics. This has been in terms of budget overruns that had been running very hot, considering whether such expenditure would be a worth-it investment for the city in the long run. Economic critics were of the feeling that that sort of money could be ploughed back into the economy to help handle pressing local issues like public housing and transport. Especially, with the expensive cleaning of the Seine River to host outdoor swimming, which many say is useless due to how dirty the river already was.
But through all this, the spirit of the Olympics remains. The Games have always been one of the most complicated mixes of triumph and tribulation, amidst a thousand obstacles thrown at them past, present, and future; Paris 2024 will not be the exception. It is in the personal stories of athletes who have overcome adversity, in the shock when new world records are set, and in the opportunity for nations to come together in celebration of shared humanity, where nations celebrate their triumph in the global stage.
The spirit of the olmypics also lives in the heart of Smukiers. The olympic games was quite popular amongst SMAK 1 students, which is mainly caused by Indonesia’s amazing 2 gold medals and also the USA men’s basketball team. As we all know, Indonesia won 2 gold medals in the Games, one in wall climbing and the other in weight lifting. These victories has been a topic of discussion for Smukiers as it has brought a lot of pride for Indonesians. As mentioned previously, SMAK 1 students, especially the boys, were very invested in the USA men’s basketball team, which some might argue is the best team ever assembled because it comprised of global basketball superstars.
