Psalm 51:17 says, "My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." The meaning of this statement is related to the preceding verse. Verse 16 says, "You don't like a sacrifice, or I'll bring it; you don't like a burnt offering." David says that when we sin, we can't offer anything to God to appease him. God desires true repentance.
Psalm 51:17 points to the one thing God desires most: to be broken for our own sins. When we agree with God about the seriousness of our sin, we take the first step toward reconciliation with Him. As long as we try to justify, justify, or justify the evil in our hearts, we will never find our way back to God. Regret is the door to freedom. Satan knows this and will do anything to dissuade us. He's advising what our selfish nature likes to hear: "Your sin isn't that bad", "Compared to everyone else, you're okay."
