Twenty Five Diamonds of Kindness
Mrs Barthilow had twelve children, 6 boys and 6 girls. Mr Barthilow has passed away a few months after the youngest was born. Mrs Barthilow had to work harder on their farm to support her family. All the boys helped her on the farm and the girls worked in the house.
This morning the sun shone brightly and Mrs Barthilow went to the farm to harvest their potatoes. She took her hoe and swung it to dig the soil. ‘Tuc!!!!’… Suddenly her hoe hit on something harder. “John! I think there’s something harder over there” Mrs Barthilow
screamed to his oldest son. “What is it, mom?” “I don’t know.” Mrs Barthilow and her son dug deeper and deeper. “Mom, it’s a chest!”
Mrs Barthilow’s family was struggling financially, they had to work very hard just to fulfil their daily needs, such as food and clothes. So, they were enthusiastic when they found that treasure chest. They opened the treasure chest in hopes of finding something valuable. Something that might help changing their lives for the better. Something that might help fulfill a more proper living condition for their family.
They then dug out the chest and bring it to their house. They examined the extravagant-looking box in expectance of finding something valuable they can sell, maybe some gold jewelleries, diamonds, or something else they can exchange for an amount money. The moment Mrs Barthilow cracked open the chest and the content inside it was revealed, their eyes opened widely.
It was a chest full of beautiful blue vibrant-coloured diamonds, 25 kilograms of it at least. It could bring them fortune and provide for the rest of their lives. They were tearing up at the sight of it. They didn’t know the saint who placed those treasures in the area of their farm, but they were really grateful for it.
The next day, they went to the city to buy some of their need they weren’t able to get their hands on before because of their financial struggles. They bought a few sets of clothes, a pair of new shoes for each person, books for the eldest son who was currently participating in college, and for once, food supplies of proper quality.
But even though Mrs Barthilow’s family gained a great amount of fortune, they didn’t become greedy and arrogant. Whenever they saw someone in need or struggling, they always offered their kindness and helps them with open hands. They saw someone who appeared very dishevelled and was wearing dirty ragged clothes when they went out to shop and they immediately called out to him and bought him some new clothes and food.
After they went back to their house, they found a note lying in front of their door. “25 kg Diamonds in exchange for your kindness is a small price to pay -A”, the note implied. It made them wonder who this ‘A’ person was, until they remember, when Mr. Barthilow was still alive, he saved a family from going into bankruptcy and poverty by lending just 25 Dollars to his neighbour, Mr. Andreas. They soon realized the person who left a chest full of diamonds was Mr. Andreas who felt grateful for the help Mr. Bathilow had provided to them back then and returned it by a thousand-fold.
