Angklung: A Traditional Indonesian Bamboo Musical Instrument
Angklung is a traditional musical instrument from Indonesia, crafted from two to four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame, bound with rattan cords. When it is shaken, it produces a unique and harmonious sound. Angklung is played during ceremonies such as rice planting, harvest and circumcision rituals. This musical instrument originates from the Sundanese people in Indonesia, particularly in West Java and Banten provinces.
Did you know? The Dutch colonial government once banned the ‘angklung’. In the mid-19th century, during Dutch colonial rule, they implemented the cultuurstelsel, or cultivation system, which prohibited the playing of the angklung, fearing it could inspire resistance among the local population. Despite these restrictions, Indonesians continued to cherish the angklung. In rural areas, people still played it secretly, passing the tradition down through generations. Later, figures like Daeng Soetigna modernized the angklung, ensuring its survival and revival in Indonesian culture.
Today, the angklung is more than just a musical instrument, it is a symbol of Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. In 2010, UNESCO recognized the Angklung as a significant piece of humanity’s cultural heritage, ensuring its place in global history. Schools and cultural institutions across Indonesia continue to teach the angklung, keeping the tradition alive for future generations. What was once seen as a threat is now a treasured part of Indonesia's cultural identity. The angklung’s journey from prohibition to global recognition can serve as a powerful reminder that traditions can endure against all odds.
