Unveiling Creativity: Defining the Spark of Innovation
WEB CONTENT SMPK 2 PENABUR - 18 January 2025
According to Science Direct, a widely accepted definition of creativity is a combination of ideas determined to have novel value, use, or meaning to various stakeholders. The creative process combines divergent (generating multiple ideas) and convergent thinking (choosing best ideas) to determine creative solutions or choices. As creativity has been increasingly labeled as a human capacity that organizations, universities, and corporations value among their employees and students, an interest in enhancing creative thinking skills has grown. Independently from an increased importance and valuation of creativity, new technologies that incorporate artificial intelligence have been developed and launched for corporate and public use.
Understanding AI: The Essence of Modern Creativity
Artificial Intelligence or “AI” refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, particularly computer systems. AI encompasses a variety of approaches and technologies, including machine learning, where systems learn from data; neural networks, which are inspired by the human brain's structure; and deep learning, a subset of machine learning involving large neural networks. These technologies enable machines to perform tasks such as speech recognition, decision-making, visual perception, and language translation, which typically require human intelligence.
The conceptual roots of AI trace back to efforts to understand human cognition. Mathematicians and computer scientists like Alan Turing laid the groundwork by exploring machine computation. Turing’s famous 1950 paper, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," introduced the idea of machines simulating intelligent behavior and proposed the Turing Test, which remains a benchmark for evaluating AI. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI's GPT series, Google's Bard, and others have surged in popularity, becoming the poster child for modern artificial intelligence. LLMs are very excellent at portraying the idea of AI due to its ability to perform a wide range of tasks without being specifically programmed for each one, such as text generation, summarization, translation and answering simple questions with logical reasoning. In this paper, we will dive into how AIs can revolutionize creativity in this day and age where it is very crucial to think in new perspectives to succeed in most fields. |
How Artificial Intelligence Impact Students Creativity
According to “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning” the rising interest and use of AI in educational settings suggests that while AI offers many benefits, a importance on the human should be applied when using AI in education. Further, the report states that “exercising judgment and control in the use of AI systems and tools is an essential part of providing the best opportunity to learn for all students”. AI tools have become instrumental in assisting students with creative tasks. A study from the University of South Carolina revealed that 100% of participants found AI helpful for brainstorming, with only 16% preferring to brainstorm without AI. This indicates a strong inclination among students to leverage AI for idea generation, thereby enhancing their creative processes. |
Promising Blessings
An article from the Stock Brook Young Investigators Review points out the potential downsides of the usage of AI in education:
- Reduction in face-to-face interactions with teachers and students, which is crucial for social skills, empathy, and collaborative
- Usage of AI may disturb the development of an original idea and critical thinking, students might become less inclined with the creative process.
- AI could also impact to student’s development of their ability to experiment, innovate, and develop unique perspectives in both academic success and personal growth.
AI should be viewed as a supplementary tool designed to enhance creativity and learning, not as a replacement for traditional methods or human interaction. Educators and students alike must ensure that AI is used thoughtfully, fostering an environment where technology supports, rather than undermines, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Although AI has negative impacts, there are also positive things in its use :
- AI can revolutionize how we develop ideas by providing fresh perspectives on various subjects.
- AI can guide the user towards unexplored angles and novel interpretations, effectively expanding their creative horizon.
- Additionally, AI serves as a source of inspiration, presenting examples and ideas that demonstrate new ways gestate.
Local innovations: The Transformative Impact of AI on Community Creativity
Recently, students at PENABUR schools have begun leveraging AI tools to enhance their creativity in various innovative ways, transforming the learning process into a more dynamic and interactive experience.
For example, AI-powered platforms like Canva enable students to design professional-quality presentations, posters, and infographics with minimal effort. These tools not only make their projects visually appealing but also teach them essential design principles, and appreciation for aesthetics. Similarly, tools like Blender have opened doors for students interested in 3D modeling and animation, allowing them to experiment with complex designs and visual effects.
Furthermore, PENABUR students have embraced AI-driven coding platforms, such as Scratch with AI extensions, to create interactive games and simulations. These tools not only boost creativity but also nurture logical thinking and technical skills, preparing them for future careers in technology and innovation.
However, PENABUR educators emphasize the importance of using AI as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for critical thinking and originality. They encourage students to combine their personal ideas with AI-generated suggestions, ensuring a balance between innovation and independent creativity. By fostering this mindset, PENABUR schools empower students to harness AI responsibly, unlocking their potential to excel in both academics and creativity. Recently, SMPK 2 Penabur has combined AI and their own creativity to make their award winning STEAM presentation which got the 1st place on the final round |
From our personal experience, AI significantly enhances students' studying and researching capabilities through various tools that can be implemented in their own way. Brainstorming tools like Canva AI and slidesai.io facilitate idea generation like for example when creating presentations and posters, while summarization tools such as Blackbox AI and Iris.ai help condense information for a more efficient use of time for creation instead of researching without leaving the required amounts of detail and knowledge needed in traditional researching. Research aids like Research Rabbit and Elicit AI streamline the research process, making it easier to explore a wider range of topics. These technologies not only foster creativity by providing diverse design options for presentations but also encourage innovative problem-solving approaches. By summarizing complex materials, students can focus on key concepts, allowing for more efficient study sessions. Overall, AI tools are transforming the educational landscape, making studying and researching more accessible and effective for students.
