The B1 Preliminary exam tests all four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It is structured as follows: Part 1 (45 minutes) – The first section of the PET Exam tests reading comprehension. It is subdivided into 6 subsections with a total of 32 questions.

How to prepare for B1 Preliminary (PET) Writing
  1. read the instructions carefully before you start each section.
  2. think about the timing. Spend 25 minutes on each part.
  3. study these vocabulary topics.
  4. study grammar at B1 level.
  5. practise writing short texts, including emails.

B1 Preliminary (PET) Writing

Two parts - 45 minutes

  1. Writing part 1: write an email
  2. Writing part 2: write an article OR a story

Scoring
The Writing section is worth 25% of the total score for the exam.

  • Writing part 1 is marked out of 20
  • Writing part 2 is marked out of 20

0–5 marks are given for each of the following criteria:

  • Content
  • Communicative Achievement
  • Organisation
  • Language
