TEACH FOR INDIA: A GLOBAL PANDEMIC

CAN'T STOP US TO COLLABORATE

by Raynard Chandrawangsa / XI MIPA 3

“Teach for India” is a collaborative project between SMAK PENABUR Kota Tangerang and Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya School, New Delhi. In this project, the members of English Club get to meet virtually with some students from India and talk about each other’s cultures which is shared by doing online presentations and group discussions. We usually make our presentations beforehand, so at the time we meet them, we can do our presentations right away. We have talked about various topics, such as festivals, dressing styles, food and eating habits.

In the mid of February, we talked about a topic that is to be honest, my favorite topic so far – it’s about landmarks. At that day, we started at around 4 PM to fit in with the Indians’ schedule because of our difference in time zones. We gathered together in a Zoom meeting and we were accompanied by Ms. Anin and Mr. Gentur. Last time, the Indians got their turn to do their presentation first, so this time, it was our turn to be the first to present. We were divided into five groups; each of them talked about four landmarks that we had chosen. Some of the landmarks that we got to talk about are Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Jam Gadang, Tanah Lot Temple, and many more. My group presented about Patung Sura dan Baya, Tugu Khatulistiwa, Patung Pancoran, and Raja Ampat. The Indians seemed to be really interested in the story behind Patung Sura dan Baya.

After we were done with our presentations, now it’s the Indians’ turn to do theirs. They usually didn’t do their presentations in groups. However, at that day, they did group presentations and each group talked about one region of India and their presentations which were combined into one. Each group talked about one region in India with its landmarks, such as Taj Mahal, Sun Temple, Red Fort, Kaziranga National Park, and many more. At the end of their presentation, they put in a little surprise quiz for us all. It was such a fun little quiz! After having presentations, we usually gave each other some comments or questions about our presentations and we called it a day eventually.

We are still having our virtual collaborative project up until now. Recently on the second week of March, we met again virtually but this time we didn’t do presentations like we usually did. Both of Indonesian and Indian students were divided into several groups to have group discussion in the breakout rooms. In the breakout rooms, we talked about our recent life, learning activities during pandemic in both countries, our opinions on online/distance learning, and many other interesting topics. We also got a chance to teach our Indian friends several words or phrases in Bahasa Indonesia, and they taught us some words in Indian too. What an enjoyable meeting!

All in all, I’m enjoying this Indonesia – India Collaborative Project so far. It’s fun to share and know more about each other’s cultures. Meeting and talking with people from other countries are really cool and we also get a chance to train our English skill as well. I’m glad to be able to participate in this project and I’m looking forward to our next meeting with the Indians. Namaste!
