BERITA LAINNYA - 10 October 2023
Mental health is an important concern, especially for SMAK PENABUR Gading Serpong. If there’s anyone who’s having problems with school or with their own life, the school provides many facilities. Starting from counseling with either counselor teachers or religion teachers, extra lessons with subject teachers for free, and school assignments are even encouraged to be done at school to minimize homework for students. These facilities are given with the purpose of helping students with their problems.
On this day, 10th of October 2023, we are celebrating World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries including Canada, Australia, Thailand, and more. The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
This year’s theme of the World Mental Health Day by Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, is Mental Health is a Universal Human Right. Human rights have always been focused on important needs such as food, shelter, and health. However, mental health stands as a critical pillar for human well-being. Recognizing that mental health is a universal human right is acknowledging the relationship between mental health and the overall quality of life. As defined by WHO, mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to their community. This definition aligns with the broader conception of human rights as both freedom from harm and freedom to lead a fulfilling life.
The international mental health logo is symbolized with a green ribbon. Why a green ribbon? Because a green ribbon symbolizes mental health, especially mental health awareness. Green is often associated with feelings of calm, tranquility, and hope. It also represents the goals of promoting well-being and providing support to those affected by mental health issues. People from around the world would wear a green ribbon to show solidarity for their friends or family who may be dealing with mental health issues, so it sends a message of support and understanding. Some people might also wear a green ribbon to remember their loved ones who struggled with mental health issues or lost their lives to mental illness. It can be a way to honor their memory and to raise awareness for us from the challenges that they faced.
With that, we must take mental health as a concern. This celebration of world mental health is an alarm for all of us to be supportive of each other, especially those who have mental health problems. As an educational institution that is also serious about educating holistically, PENABUR supports World Mental Health Day and hopes to make a better impact on the world by taking concern for the mental health of students, teachers, and everyone else around the world.
“The humanity we all share is more important than the mental illnesses we may not.”
