Prominent Figures in Youth Activism by Karin
As youths, we are one of society’s main agents of improvement and advancement, as stated by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Though we might have often heard that as youngsters, we shouldn’t worry or fill our minds too much on the conflict in the ‘real world’ or ‘adult quarrels’. However, from time to time we have seen several personages that prove this sentiment wrong.
Across the globe, youths are moving forward with courage and conviction to deal with important issues and advocate for a better future. Whether it's a single voice challenging social norms or two determined youth igniting discussions about education, social justice, or climate change, their courage is a testament to the power of youth activism. When they speak up, they not only show a deep sense of responsibility for the world they will inherit, but they also inspire others to join the movement as well. These young leaders remind us that change often begins with a single act of courage, proving that the voices of the youth are not only relevant but crucial in shaping a brighter tomorrow. Here are a few brief run-throughs of some prominent voices in our generation.
Greta Thunberg was only eight when she realized the perils of climate change and how politicians, as lawmakers, fail to bring this issue up front in the spotlight and discuss the crisis that can endanger the pace of the earth. She started to gain attention from her weekly protest called ‘School Strike for Climate Change’ (which would later be known as ‘Fridays for Future’) where she would skip school every Friday and protest the issue in front of the Swedish Parliament. Her protest influenced other youths to participate and voice their views, to the point where it reached global notice. Her powerful speeches at platforms such as the UN and the World Economic Forum have challenged leaders to put the planet above profit. Through her actions, Greta has amplified the voices of young people, brought climate change to the forefront of global discourse, and galvanized a new generation to fight for a sustainable future.
After witnessing the oppressive rule of the Taliban in her hometown of Swat Valley, Pakistan, which sought to deny girls the right to learn, Malala Yousafzai became an activist for girls' education. She began speaking out through a BBC blog at just 11 years old, sharing her experiences, and advocating for education. She survived a brutal assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012. This assassination attempt only strengthened her resolve to fight for women’s rights. Since then, Malala has become a worldwide icon for women's rights and education thanks to her bravery and activism. As the youngest-ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, she has inspired millions, founded the Malala Fund to support education worldwide, and continues to empower young people, especially girls, to fight for their right to learn and shape their futures.
Young activists like Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, and innumerable others have demonstrated that being young does not preclude having a big impact on the world. Millions of others have been motivated to stand up, speak out, and take action by their bravery, tenacity, and unrelenting dedication to causes like social justice, education, and climate action. These inspiring individuals serve as a reminder that young people's voices may affect global policy, challenge established norms, and create a more equitable and sustainable future. Their actions work as a rallying cry for all generations to back and magnify the movements headed by young leaders who will not accept anything less than advancement.
