Social Media Activism (Three Student Perspective) - Part 1
BERITA LAINNYA - 08 December 2024
Social media is a great tool that is used to raise awareness, educate, and shade light on social issues. Social media has given a voice to individuals, especially young people, who were previously silenced, and who can now play a vital role in bringing about social and political change. Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and many more have made it easier for activists to connect, share, and mobilize large numbers of people. In Indonesia, social media users have reached 191 million people with 54% in the 18-34 age range and an average usage of 3 hours and 14 minutes per day. Having the advantages of interactivity and networking, a message can be created in such a way, not only in writing but also in the form of images or videos, so that it can give rise to digital activism that can have a significant impact on certain issues.
For young people, speaking out on social media is the best way to respond to events. The messages of youth activism on social media have a strong tendency to influence the public. This has been proven from decades ago, before telecommunications, people usually needed to carry posters to voice their aspirations in the middle of the street. At that time, street activism turned out to be powerful and effective. As time changes, the digital era has changed the way people voice their aspirations. With social media, anyone can have the opportunity to express their voices without any cost.
It is undeniable that today’s activists are slowly making social media one of their main resources to voice their aspirations. Using social media to raise voices and stories, create awareness, and build and strengthen relationships creates a space for organizations, activists, and citizens to demand justice. With its reach and influence, social media has the potential to change the way we think, act, and communicate. However, it is important to use social media responsibly and consciously, keeping in mind its challenges and potential drawbacks. As long as activism remains grounded in truth and empathy, social media will continue to play a vital role in creating change in the world.
Benefits of youth activism to a person by LETISIA WIDYA
Young people who engage in activism and service experience personal growth, expand their networks, gain learning, and enjoy opportunities to expand their participation in political leadership and the wider community. It is good for young people to be involved in political activities.
Activism that challenges oppressive conditions can help young people develop problem-solving and collective leadership skills. Activism teaches young people to think analytically and critically about social, political, and economic issues. They are trained to see problems from multiple perspectives and find effective solutions. Although activism is now predominantly done on social media, it still involves their public speaking skills to communicate their ideas and opinions confidently and clearly. In addition, through this activism, young people learn to work in teams, collaborate with people from different backgrounds, and build strong social networks. They also learn to appreciate differences of opinion and increase their empathy skills. Activism helps strengthen interpersonal skills, such as negotiation, conflict resolution, and good listening skills, all of which are important in everyday life and careers.
