Positive Vibes : Stop Giving People Control of Your Life by Christian Samuel
BERITA LAINNYA - 21 October 2023
A lot of times, we humans can really depend on someone to get happiness, money, or anything. Sometimes, we can feel happy, excited, and joyful, while other times we can feel sad, angry, or even depressed. Every human on earth has something that’s called a locus of control. A locus of control is a person's beliefs about how much control they have over what happens to them in their life and how much influence they have over what happens in the world around them.
Do you ever feel like you’re not in control of your own life like you’re just a pawn in a game that’s being played by someone else? That if it weren’t for a bad decision someone else made, you would be happier, wealthier, and better off. A lot of people feel this way in fact. You have something called an external locus of control. A person with an external locus of control believes that their life is out of their control, and they simply rely on other people, luck, and fate.

Having a mindset of an external locus of control may seem like really good because you don’t have to worry about anything, and all you can do is hope for luck to be on your side. However, this mindset will make you very weak. Having the skill of making decisions by yourself is super important for your life, but you won’t build that personality if you simply just rely on others all the time. If you want strength, you have to shift your locus of control to an internal locus of control. People with an internal locus of control believe that they’re in control of their lives. They believe that they can make things happen with the right decision.
If you have an external locus of control, you give up responsibility for the outcomes of your life and become a victim, and if you become a victim, you become powerless to change your own fate. But if you take on an internal locus of control, you take responsibility for the outcomes of your life and become a creative agent, and as a creative agent, you become empowered to choose your own destiny. Of course, the decision is yours. Each of us has the decision on if we want to have an internal or external locus of control.
There are a few ways to help us gain control of ourselves. For example, finding motivation and setting goals for yourself can help you take control of yourself more. When you look at the bigger picture instead of every detail needed to cross the finish line, you'll find yourself more motivated to get things done. Another example is to get a good night’s sleep. Sleeping impacts our brain function, specifically the prefrontal cortex, which handles reasoning, and the amygdala, which regulates emotions. And lastly, we need to avoid decision fatigue. Self-control has important implications for good decision-making, and decision fatigue harms these abilities.
