Jumat Sehat: The Art of Yoga

Penaburians, What is yoga? Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy and spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony and connection between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living. The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite'.

 

There are multiple types of yoga and each type focuses on different aspects of the body. For example, Kundalini focuses on the effects of breath on our postures while Bikram focuses on stretching our muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Other types of yoga include Ashtanga, Hatha, Integral, Iyengar, Viniyoga, and Yin. With so many types of yoga, we can choose which type is to our liking.

Why should we do yoga? Well, people don’t just do yoga for fun. There are lots of benefits that you can get from doing yoga both physically and mentally. Some benefits are lowering blood pressure and heart rate, Improvement of self-confidence, coordination, concentration, and posture, reduction of stress, helping with overall fitness, Increased flexibility, muscle strength and tone, Aids with digestion, etc.

 

When doing yoga, we must do it safely and correctly so that we can get the benefits and avoid injury. To be safe while doing yoga we can start slow and learn the basics first. This way we can have a strong foundation when going into more challenging poses. Besides that, we should also Find a qualified teacher who understands what they are teaching and knows how to help you in case anything goes wrong. Some more ways to avoid injury include not pushing yourself too hard, listening to your body, avoiding problematic poses, and choosing the appropriate level for your body and capability.
