Happy Moon Festival by Vincent Xavier and Nadya Josephine
BERITA LAINNYA - 29 September 2023
As the sun sets on the horizon, ending the cycle of the day, casting a warm amber hue across the sky. The air is crisp and cool, filling the air with a delightful aroma. It can only mean one thing: September 29th is drawing near, and it marks the enchanting celebration of the Moon Festival all across Asia. A cherished festival, bringing people of all kinds of differences to revel in the beautiful culture of the moon and the delicious mooncakes that come along with it.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, often referred to as the Moon Festival, is a time-honored tradition celebrated by most of Asia. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, coinciding with September 29th in the Gregorian calendar. At its core, the festival is a celebration of unity. Families and loved ones come together to admire the full moon, a symbol of unity and family. It represents the idea of families coming together to celebrate, appreciating each other’s company, and strengthening their bonds.
Celebrating the Moon Festival, it is only fitting that the heart of the celebration is the delicious mooncake. Mooncakes come in a variety of different flavors and styles, each telling a story of their own. Despite their diversity, they all share the same round shape. The round shape stems from the fact that mooncakes are traditionally enjoyed during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. People symbolically connect with the energy and beauty of a full moon, making these delicacies all the more compelling.
And as the once blue sky softens into shades of amber, the sun sinks lower into the horizon. Bathing the world in serene stillness as the colors deepen from the vibrant orange to dusky purples. The night sky becomes a vast plain, sprinkled generously with vibrant dots. The full moon takes its place as the highlight of the night, casting its glow upon the world. The festival is not just about flavors but also about the luminous beauty of the moon. Gazing at the sky under the watchful eye of the full moon tightens the bond between loved ones and serves as a reminder that, despite our differences, despite our upbringings, we all share the same moon and the same dreams.
So, as the 29th of September draws near, we prepare to embrace the traditions of the Moon Festival once more. Under the moonlit radiants may we reflect on the unity of our family, and loved ones, and cherish the beauty of tradition. To recognize that, under the same moon, we all share a world together. Thank you for reading and I hope for all of us to have a wonderful Moon Festival especially the family who celebrate it.
