the story is told in 2 perspectives, by Day and June. Day is a 15/yo criminal on the run from "The Republic". The Republic has no record of what Day looks like or of his fingerprints. Day’s mother thinks Day died in a labor camp. Tess, an orphan that Day befriended and helps, stalk Day's house. The world here has a plague that infects alot of poor people, including Day's family. The Troops around the city will hunt down and kill most of the patients. Day has a younger brother named Eden and an older brother named John. Eden is almost about to turn 10/yo, that isnt good. because every child in the Republic need to do a test called "The Trial" at that age, this tests the persons physical and mental fortitude and will decide the future. People who get high scores will be able to attend school, but the ones who fail will go to labor camps. Day watches the soldiers as they spray painted the door with a red sign, meaning somethings bad about to happen
The 2nd main character in this novel is June, she is a 15/yo student in Drake University, thats the best school in the republic. She got in because she is supposedly the only person to have ever gotten a perfect 1500 score The Trial. The Dean has suspended June alot of times because she doesnt respect neither the rules nor the teachers. Metias, her older brother, comes to pick her up. June said that she was training to catch the legendary criminal Day, who was said could clime a 5 story building in less than 10 seconds. June explains that she was practicing catching Day, who is known to have scaled a five-story building in less than eight seconds. Metias was a bit mad at June, but he couldnt stay mad because he loved his sister. They went to where they lived, the car they rode being driven by Metias's best friend Thomas
