Title : A Little Princess
Author : Frances Hodgson Burnett
Summarization by : Ann Devin Nara / XI IPS 1
There is an orphan daughter named Sara Crewe who is only 7 years old. A loving life with his father Captain Crewe. Until the time came for Sara to live in a boarding school in London which was far from her home in India. Even though the daughter of a rich person, instead of being an arrogant and spoiled child, Sara actually became an outgoing and fun child, thirsty for knowledge and good at storytelling. Her imagination is extraordinary. She can devour various books like a little wolf.
Her first experience at school caused Miss Minchin, the head of the boarding school where she lived, to hold grudges and glorify her as a favorite student and daughter of a rich man. The incident began when Miss Minchin brought in a French teacher for Sara without asking first if Sara could speak French. And Miss Minchin became very embarrassed when the teacher said, Sara, who has a mother from France, doesn't need to learn French anymore. Even the accent is like a real Frenchman.
Sara is very strong for a daughter her age. This is because she is proud as a captain’s daughter and she wants to act like a true captain who is able to bear the harshness of war without complaints. Sara's days in the dormitory are accompanied by Emily, a doll that has long been coveted. She is good at making friends with anyone even with the stupid Ermengarde and Lottie, the whiny and annoying little one. Her intelligence tells the story makes her have a lot of friends even Becky, a small waitress who lives in the attic.
Things change when his father's business penetrates into a diamond and ends in bankruptcy and the death of Captain Crewe. The news of her death was received by Sara right during her eleventh birthday celebration with her classmates. Sara's life like a princess turns 180 degrees into a small servant of the attic resident with Becky. Her optimistic attitude is illustrated in how she can be friends with the little mouse she named Melchisedec and the sparrows around the attic. The loft of the room for her is a prison which one day there will definitely be freedom.
At the end, the magic also came in the midst of the cruelty of treating the owner of the dormitory and even the cooks who often vented anger at him by telling him to shop outside the dormitory in the snowfall. The Indian lord who became her new neighbor was the bearer of the miracle and returned her to be a princess as she should be.
