Women in Power

Women in power are women who hold an occupation or position that gives them great authority and influence that also comes with great responsibility. During the early ages, power has been divided unequally among genders. Powerful positions have been stereotyped with men opposed to women with the reason being that men are supposedly stronger and more logical than women. But, as society starts to recognize this problem and gender equality increases, modern women now hold more and more powerful positions instead of just being seen as housewives.
A study even shows that
“Absence is not merely a sign of disadvantage and disenfranchisement, but the exclusion of women from positions of power also compounds gender stereotypes and retards the pace of equalization"
Examples of women in power at the moment are:
1. Kamala Harris
She is an American politician and attorney who became the first female vice president and the highest ranked female official in US history. She is also the first African American and Asian American vice president of the US which is a big deal as she herself is a daughter or immigrants from Jamaica and India which serves a powerful counter-narrative to President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric policies at that time.
2. Emma Watson
Emma Watson is a name that most of us may have heard of as she became a prominent actress after acting as Hermione Granger in the very successful franchise of Harry Potter. In the recent years, she has been a spokesperson on women’s rights and other social issues. Until in 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launce the UN Women campaign HeForShe movement which advocates for gender equality. Since then, she has been participating in multiple events to promote women’s rights and women’s political participation.
Today, women represent 21.9 percent of parliamentarians globally, and 39 lower houses of Congress around the world are made up of at least 30 percent women. In addition, 10 women are heads of state and 15 are heads of government. Even though there are still some countries that have not made progress, we can see that it’s going to change soon seeing that there are more and more activists in the world.
