World Environment Day 2025

What is World Environment Day?
More than 150 countries around the world celebrate this day on June 5. It was established in 1973 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has become the largest global platform to raise awareness about environmental issues, global warming, and marine pollution. Each year, UNEP designates a theme and also selects a host country for the annual event.
In 2025, the theme of World Environment Day (WED) is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. This theme highlights the severe impacts of plastic pollution and emphasizes the need for effective action to address it. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has chosen Jeju Province, the Republic of Korea, as the host of this year’s global celebration.
Every single day, the world dumps approximately 8 million pieces of plastic waste into oceans, rivers, and lakes. By 2050, oceans are projected to contain more plastic than fish. This is a serious issue that demands attention and action. Plastic pollution is a global issue affecting countries worldwide. It harms the environment in numerous ways—directly impacting water, air, and land—while also disrupting the balance of ecosystems.
How can we take action to “Beat Plastic Pollution?”
Tackling this issue requires effort from each one of us as individuals. The first and simplest step we can take is to reduce our consumption of plastic. This includes refusing single-use plastics and opting for reusable shopping bags, water bottles, and food containers. The second step is to focus on recycling, which helps minimize the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the environment. The third step is to organize or join communities to clean up plastic waste in public spaces and raise awareness about plastic pollution. These actions help educate others and initiate change.
World Environment Day 2025 serves as a powerful reminder to beat plastic pollution for a cleaner environment and a better future. By embracing the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, we are encouraged to take action not just on June 5, but every day—until plastic pollution no longer threatens our precious Earth.
