TEDxYouth@SmakOne is an annual event which features a widely inspiring and insightful set of ideas worth sharing. It is a great vacancy to welcome creative and hardworking individuals, committees, and figures who put their hearts on the event. This year, we present our masterpiece: Mainframe Under Siege. We would like to convey a message, that although the world has shifted and problems have multiplied, our counters are fierce and we stand up tall in resilience.
On November 16, 2024, SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta altogether division four of the student council hosted its highly anticipated TEDxYouth@SmakOne event, bringing together a diverse lineup of seven inspiring speakers: Bryant Kandani, Valencia Gabriella, Bryan Ferrysienanda, Natasha Aurelia, Kezia Manik, Oscar Darmawan, and Filda Salim. The event was officially opened by Callista Princessa, the event coordinator, and Mr. Yendra Yohannes, the deputy headmaster, who welcomed the audience with an empowering message about innovation and youth-driven change.
The talks began with Bryant Kandani, who explored the double-edged nature of social media. He highlighted its potential for harm due to addictive algorithms but emphasized how self-awareness and purposeful use can transform it into a tool for personal growth. Valencia Gabriella, a former student council president, followed with a compelling discussion on the value of independent learning. She encouraged students to embrace curiosity and take initiative in their education to navigate a rapidly changing world. Meanwhile, Bryan, an SMAK 1 alumnus and MasterChef Indonesia participant, shed light on the undervaluation of Indonesian cuisine in fine dining. He passionately called for cultural pride, public education, and innovation to elevate Indonesia’s culinary heritage globally.
The event also spotlighted the voices of current SMAK 1 students. Kezia Manik shared her humorous yet insightful experience navigating cultural differences during her exchange year in the United States, while Natasha Aurelia, a final-year student, reflected on the pressures of an academically competitive environment. She urged her audiences to look beyond grades and prioritize personal growth over routine cycles. Their speeches resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing themes of adaptability, resilience, and self-discovery.
Rounding out the lineup were Oscar Darmawan, founder of Indodax, who shared his journey in building Indonesia’s leading cryptocurrency exchange, and Filda Salim, who captivated the audience with her exploration of music’s profound impact on human emotions and well-being. Filda emphasized the therapeutic potential of music in healing and its ability to enhance everyday life. Midway through the event, SMAK 1’s dance club, Serenity, delivered a mesmerizing performance, and the event concluded with a high-energy show by the school’s rock band, Cressendo Rock, leaving the audience inspired and energized.
TEDxYouth@SmakOne successfully celebrated creativity, culture, and innovation, leaving attendees with fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of possibility. It was a testament to SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta’s commitment to nurturing not just academic excellence, but also the intellectual and emotional growth of its students.
