Public Speaking Brings a Spillover Effect, the Main Key in Improving Other Abilities
General - 08 July 2024
Starting from joining the English Debate Society (EDS) since starting school at SMAK 1 PENABUR, Marcello Rigo Aruan's public speaking skills or who is familiarly called Rigo continues to develop.
Apart from honing debating skills, EDS provides training for students who want to take part in the National School Debating Championship (NSDC) competition. A national level English debate event.
At NSDC 2023, Rigo began to have the courage to take part in the provincial selection, but unfortunately he did not succeed in passing.
"Even though I failed, it didn't dampen my determination to continue training myself and have the courage to take part in the provincial level selection at NSDC 2024 in class XI." Rigo said.
Taking place from 19 - 25 June 2024 at Unika Atmajaya, South Jakarta, NSDC, which is an event of the Indonesian Achievement Talent Agency (BPTI) National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), was attended by 36 provincial contingents and 1 Indonesian Overseas School team. Carrying the theme "Speak of Your Mind, Speak for Indonesia".
Representing the DKI Jakarta team, Rigo won 2nd Runner Up and 9th Place Speaker, which was taken from the average speaker score in the preliminary round.
"Big shoutout to Miss Evi who has facilitated all the training, registration process, administration, and accompanied me during the competition. Friends at EDS were also a source of motivation and mental support during the preparation period, especially when we competed together. EDS alumni are also a source of inspiration and givers of advice that cannot be forgotten. Apart from that, the coaches for the great DKI Jakarta team are a source of inspiration for me." said Rigo.
Rigo felt happy and found an extraordinary challenge when taking part in the 2024 NSDC event.
“It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I met people and made friends from all over the country in what was the pinnacle of all national debate competitions. As stressful as it was, I knew I was living in the lofty dream I once thought would never actualize. Moreover, the people around me made it beyond fun. The stakes were incredibly high and the pressure was immense, intensifying the stings and triumphs each blunder and feat brought. My only pet peeve is that this year's NSDC was held in Jakarta so I didn't get to travel to another province, but the venue was absolutely amazing throughout and that more than made up for it. NSDC was an incredible dream and now it's an incredible core memory. I'm very proud (to propose).” said Rigo, expressing his experience.
For Rigo, taking part in the 2024 NSDC competition will further sharpen his public speaking skills.
“Public speaking skills may seem niche, but they can have a spillover effect on other abilities. Especially the ability to convey ideas confidently and structured. In a world context with trends that encourage individualism, the ability to communicate and work together is a value that will continue to increase." Rigo said.
He also advised every student at BPK PENABUR Jakarta to continue to be enthusiastic and believe that one day their dreams will come true.
“Love what you do because that's the best way to get things done. No matter what happens, the enjoyment you get from the process and small triumphs is valuable in and of itself.” he said.
