Using the nearpod.com application as a learning medium during the Covid-19 period (Written by Gunther Dharmaputra)

In the era of COVID-19 where students may not be able to physically join classes at school, distance learning has been seen as an alternative to bridge any learning gap. Although teachers have experienced several obstacles in conveying this type of learning, their passion to educate our students has fueled them to keep going.
In an article written by Kemp (1975:15), when it comes to effective learning, it requires interaction as one conveys messages from the source to the recipient of the message. Here, the message being sent is an information that is converted into audio-visual form, then through media such as radio, blackboard, YouTube and many other channels. After this, the message is conveyed through the senses to be processed into information that is received in its entirety, but in the middle of the journey, obstacles can hinder effective transmission.
With the importance of channels to deliver key information, I have found Nearpod as a good medium that effectively translates information to our students. This interactive platform breaks down seemingly boring discussions into various exciting activities that stimulate creative and critical thinking of the students. As a personal advocate of this platform, I found the following beneficial for our teachers and students:
1. Students can pay attention to the discussions where the teacher is in control of. Interactive videos are also available where teachers can insert questions in the middle, which can be followed up after the discussion.
2. A power point function is also available so teachers can personalize their own slides. This also makes it easier for teachers to simplify materials, and help out those students who have difficulty absorbing complex information.
3. Nearpod has game functions that stimulates the interest of the students. This also helps in the information-retention process.
All in all, Nearpod would bring a great advantage to all learners and teachers especially in this current pandemic situation. With Nearpod, it fills the gaps that remote learning has to offer. It may not be as effective as the physical classes, but it certainly provides an alternative avenue where effective learning can take place.
