Ina Liem’s Session on Career Day "Mentoring Guidance to The New Pardigm of Education"

Ina Liem is a famous speaker from Jurusanku who shares her experience on this annual event called Career Day. This event is held by SMAK PENABUR Summarecon Bekasi on August 27, 2020 to introduce students and their parents to the professional world. Attended by 125 participants (including Ina Liem and team, all 12^th graders, parents, and teacher), although kind of crowded, this is a great opportunity to dig and absorb information as much as possible. Ina Liem started her session with a mind-blowing presentation which changes our view of the careers in this 4.0 era. As if needed to clarify the flawless presentation, she ended her session with an enlightening Q and A which of course attracts many students to ask.

            The presentation overall is about what kind of career will grow in the future, especially 4.0 era. In case you haven’t heard, 4.0 era is an industrial revolution which focuses heavily on technology and anything related to it (automation, machine learning, AI, etc.). So, how do we overcome this fast-changing industry? Firstly, of course by acknowledging the fact that needed job in the future will change at last.

            Now, you may be wondering, what are the careers most suitable in this 4.0 era? Ina Liem says that there is no “safe” job these days. But to “repay” what can’t be answered, she showed a graph called the Bloom’s Taxonomy which explains education goals. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of students who is at the bottom of this graph, which is learning by remembering. To be honest, it is not really useful in the professional world. On the other hand, to compete with other professionals, we need to climb the graph and reach a higher understanding in our learning.

            Ina Liem emphasizes the essence of problem solving and creativity these days. Many people think they are creative or innovative, but only a few percentile of their colleagues agree. Innovation starts with a problem, thus we need to observe around us what our problems are. It can be as simple as “Ugh...It’s not convenient to do the dishes by hand, therefore I will create an automatic machine which will wash my dirty dishes! And, I will call it a dishwasher!” Problem solved, and we have this new thing called the dishwasher. It’s a win-win solution! On the other hand, creativity is finding the best solution on how we handle those problems.

            So, to innovate something new, it goes something like this; find a problem, be creative for the solution, innovate. It may sound easy in theory, but to apply this in our daily life is pretty hard. To answer the question on paragraph 3, this is what we need to excel in the professional world, innovation. That’s right, we need to make a better, easier way to do inconvenient tasks, and that’s on our problem-solving and creativity skill.

            So, how do we choose the right career for ourselves? Keep track of your talent, interest, value, and prospect. Talking about talent, it’s like a gift. You are somehow good at something from the very beginning. But, to improve and/or grow your talent, you need to practice and have determination. If it has grown enough, that talent will be what we called as “passion”. On the other hand, interest is when you like doing something without considering whether you are good at it or not. This is important to consider, knowing if we do something we love, anything is possible. Job value is what we gain from our job, it can be new skill, achievement, relations, and so on. Lastly, is the career prospect. It is by “fitting” ourselves with what is currently needed and important in this world. All of these are essential to find the best-suited job for yourself.

            In conclusion, we choose the right career for ourselves with many considerations. Remember that there is no “safe” jobs now, so things to consider are our talent, interest, value, and prospect. Don’t forget to also climb our learning ability up the Bloom’s Taxonomy, be creative and also innovative. Because, giving ideas is a thing, but giving ideas for problem-solving (innovative thinking) is the one needed.
