SCIENCE FILM FESTIVAL 2021

Berita BPK PENABUR Jakarta - 15 November 2021

November 15, 2021: SMPK 4 Penabur Jakarta hosted a science film festival with the
help of Goethe Institute Indonesia. It was called “Science Meets Cinema” which was open to
only the bilingual students of the school. It was a one-and-a-half-hour event held on a Monday
after school, which of course had to be done virtually given the circumstances right now.
Students entered a zoom meeting, enjoyed videos, and conducted experiments together.

First, the instructors played a video called “Life Changing Minutes” which was roughly 10
minutes long. The first few scenes show a family having dinner together. However, the grandpa
can be seen smoking while eating his dinner. Though his son has politely reminded him to stop
countless times, he refuses. Soon enough, the entire family starts to cough due to the heavy
cigarette smoke. The family decides to buy gas masks to prevent themselves from getting
diseases from the smoke. They were given no choice but to wear the intricate masks
everywhere around the house. The video then explains the rate of death caused by cigarettes
and tobacco, in which more than 8 million people die every year. Though more than 7 million of
those people die from the result of direct cigarette / tobacco use, there are still over 1 million
people indirectly affected by the activity of smoking every year. Especially indoor smoking like in
the story above, smoking indoors leads to trapped smoke. With little air circulation, it starts to
pollute the air inside, making it unhealthy and highly toxic for everyone who inhales it. This may
cause a fatal amount of diseases, starting from shortness of breath, lung diseases, heart
diseases, numerous types of cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and many more.
Generally, this video is a real eye-opening reminder for us to not smoke for the sake of our own
health and others’ around us.

Soon after that, they played a very short video on the first experiment, which was making
a lung model from things available around the house. The materials needed were a plastic
bottle, a straw, some clay, a rubber band and two balloons. After succeeding, the lung model
should function similar to our actual lungs with the bottle acting as the pleural cavity, the balloon
at the bottom of the bottle substituting for our diaphragm, and the inner balloon representing the
lung itself. When the bottom balloon is pulled, it imitates the relaxation of the diaphragm, and
the inner balloon starts inflating, just like the lungs in our body expand when we breathe in.

Then, we viewed the second short film. This one had a theme of ecological footprints. It
depicts two neighbors, in which one is very aware of the environment and adopts a very
eco-friendly lifestyle, while the other is the complete opposite. The latter had a sister who was
coming over to stay for the weekend, who was coincidentally also very environmentally aware.
The guy wanted to impress his sister so he pretended to live as his neighbor. The neighbor was
puzzled at first but soon got the hint, so he played along to it. That evening, the sister
approached the neighbor and told him that she knew about the pretense. The two of them
decided to team up and play a trick on the brother. The sister then proposed the idea to her
brother of helping out his neighbor live a better lifestyle. For the next couple of days, the three
of them sorted out all the junk from the neighbor’s pretend house. They got rid of so many
things with the brother trying to keep his distress hidden. On the final night, they were about to
sell his luxurious bed with many different massage modes integrated in it. This was his final
straw, he couldn’t hold in his emotions any longer. He admitted to his sister that all of this was a
lie and that he didn't have this perfect eco-friendly lifestyle at all. His sister said she knew that
from the beginning and encouraged him to improve his lifestyle, to which he agreed to. This
video was played in hopes that we can be more aware of our environment and execute a better
way of life.

The second and last experiment was DNA extraction from a banana. We took half a
banana and mashed it up in a ziploc bag. Then added 3 spoonfuls of dish soap, water and salt.
Once thoroughly mixed inside the bag, the solution was poured over a tea strainer and we had
to very patiently wait for it to drip down into the glass cup as pushing it down or shaking it was
forbidden. When enough of the filtrate had dripped down, we had to tilt the cup while pouring
some liquid hand sanitizer down its walls. This was done in order to prevent the sudden
pressure of the hand sanitizer disrupting the experiment. After a couple of seconds, white
cotton-looking strands started to form on the surface of the solution, which was in fact the
banana’s DNA. An interesting fun fact to know is that 60% of our DNA is the same as a banana.

To sum up, this science film festival not only had very enjoyable and fascinating
experiments, but it was also extremely helpful in raising awareness on two really important
topics which were smoking and our ecological footprints. All in all, it was such a fun way to learn
new and important information.
