Title : The Picture of Dorian Gray
Author : Oscar Wilde
Summarization by : Melanton Gabriel Siregar / XI MIPA 2
Once upon a time, there is a noble man called Henry, with his full title Lord Henry Wotton and his dear friend, who is a painter (an artist) called Basil Hallward. The Lord met his friend in his studio, finding him doing a new painting that is based on Middle-Eastern daily life. A moment later, Henry suggested Basil to send his new painting (Dorian Gray) to the Grosvenor (the Duke of Westminster?) because he thought that sending that painting to the Academy would be a vain. But Basil refused, since he was sure that many portraits or parts of himself are able to be seen in Dorian Gray. They did debate though. Harry (Henry) told that Basil was impeccably childish because he said there was too much of himself in it. Basil replied with a serious look, straight in the face, "Harry. Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself."
