Title : The Lottery
Author : Shirley Jackson
Summarization by : Abraham Bukhari Treyteja Herucakra / X MIPA 2
The lesson of The Lottery is that tradition can be blindly followed by people who have no conviction. But it doesn't mean that we cannot follow a tradition. It is acceptable to follow them on faith rather than toss them out unless we have concrete evidence that the tradition is bad. But in this case, we know how bad the tradition is.
In the story, a fictitious small American town practices "the lottery," a yearly custom in which a random community member is chosen and stoned to death in order to ensure a good harvest and rid the town of evil omens. The town gathers on June 27 of each summer to conduct the lottery and stone one of their neighbors to death. Everyone is expected to participate, even the kids.
