Edward Prendick, a graduate in science, is able to survive a shipwreck in the southern Pacific Ocean. He is taken onboard the Ipecacuanha, a passing ship, where Montgomery rescues him. Prendick also encounters M'ling, a hideous local who appears to be Montgomery's manservant. Some of Montgomery's pets are being transported on the ship, most eerily a puma.
The captain orders Prendick to leave the ship with Montgomery as they sail toward the island that is Montgomery's goal. Montgomery reveals that Prendick won't be staying with him on the island. Nonetheless, the captain disembarks Prendick in a dinghy and continues sailing. Montgomery feels sorry for Prendick when he sees that the captain has left him and saves him.
