Nelson Mandela was born july 18, 1918 and called Rolihlahla which has meaning "pulling the branch of the tree" or some times translated "Troublemaker". He later preferred named Madiba, his clan name. But when he was 7, his first teacher said his name was Nelson. From then his name changed to Nelson. His childhood was happy and he had his dreams.
At 16, he underwent abakhwetha it is a requirement before taking up the burdens of a man. Young Mandela heard stories of how our land was invaded by white people starting in the 1600s. He also heard the stories of our heroes, like you, Maqoma who fought the Europeans in the 1800s. He did not just hear tales of war he also learned the ways of peace.
Nelson Mandela went to boarding school in south africa. He is not the best student but a hard worker. He loved sport and appreciated gardening with Rev. Harris. He learned self reliance, as well as those very british traits of civility and restraint. He loved british culture. He sometimes referred to him self as a black englishman. In the 1940s, he attended FT. Hare Collage, the most prestigious school available to africians. He met his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tamboquiet who is quiet and intellectual.
