Title : English Classics: Peter pan
Author : J.M Barrie
Summarization by : John Michael Purba / XI MIPA 2
The plot of "Peter Pan" opens in the Darling family's nursery in London, with Mrs. Darling sorting through her children's minds as they sleep. She is disturbed that all three children have been thinking of a boy named Peter Pan. She asks about it, and Wendy says Peter sometimes visits while they sleep. One night, Mrs. Darling sees Peter in the nursery, but when he notices her (an adult), he flees out the window. However, Nana (the motherly dog) catches his shadow and traps it in the nursery.
This novel asks why children must grow up, and what might happen if they never did. Although a group of Lost Boys shares prolonged youth with Peter for a time, all of them decide, after gaining a taste of a mother's love, to be raised by parents and grow up into adults. Only Peter remains eternally youthful, living with the fairies, suggesting that although some people might stall adulthood, most choose to grow up one day. Peter was based on J.M. Barrie's brother who died in childhood, remaining eternally young. The fairy tale genre allows Barrie to explore what might happen to children who cannot grow up because they died early.
