The book follows 4 friends; Jude, Willem, Malcolm and JB, as they navigate through the highs and lows of life with each others support. This book depicts the fragile side to friendship, the love and hurt that comes with caring about someone. Jude St. Francis was abandoned by his parents and spent his childhood in a monastery in South Dakota, raised by the priests there. Early in his childhood, he often threw tantrums which caused him to be beated by the priests there. They also did many other awful things to him, even if they were priests, such as sexual assault. Later on when he turned 10, him and a priest called Brother Luke, the only one who wasn't cruel to him, left the monastery. Brother Luke had promised to take care of him well, but that was far from the truth. For the next 6 years of his life he was forced by Brother Luke to become a sex worker to make money. In the end, Luke took his own life. And so, without a guardian he was sent to foster care. In the foster home that he was sent to he was treated even worse than when he was in the monastery. Once he turned 18 he immediately left for college in New York, Jude was an incredibly bright student, and so he had no trouble applying for a law degree. This is where the 4 friends met as roommates.
Willem Ragnarsson was born to a Swedish mother and Icelandic father. They immigrated to be farmers in Wyoming. Willem grew up with siblings, who eventually die at young ages due to health issues. His parents were emotionally unavailable, and acted indifferent to everything in life. Wether he got into a prestigious college or his brother, Hemming, was dying,they displayed zero emotion. He decided on an acting degree. And while he struggled to find jobs in his earlier years, having to work as a waiter in a restaurant, later on in his kid 30s he was regarded as the best actor in the world. Him and Jude are very close, so close that Jude became very depressed after his passed away in a car accident. He helped Jude conquer his internal demons, helped him in making sure that Jude doesn't cut himself as much.
Then there is JB and Malcolm. They were both born to wealthy parents. Malcolm's parents wanted him to be an architect and JB became a painter. At first JB struggles to find meaning in his projects, painting whatever that was in front of him, and this resulted in little outcome for him. As time went on however, JB found that he enjoys capturing candid photos of his friends and painting those photographs. And the project was a massive hit. Sometime during all of this he forgot to ask Jude for permission to make one of the painting public, this resulted in a big fallout between them.
