ENGLISH CORNER - Dare to Speak

It is a fact that there are still many people who are facing difficulties in learning English, especially when it comes to speaking. The fact that it is still unusual for their tongue to pronounce words in English and the “sensation” might not be that enjoyable could possibly hinder their desire to try and learn more. Not to mention people’s judgements towards their accent, pronunciation, intonation, and others which also make things even worse.
However, as high school students, we need to keep in mind that speaking is a matter of practice. The idea of challenging yourself to open your mouth and let your tongue pronounce those words in your own style has to be the spirit.
Here are some practical tips to help you:
- Talk to yourself
Although this sounds weird, this tip will be really beneficial for you as you will be talking to yourself in English. Try to create a scenario in your mind and play with it as if you were an actor / actress of a great movie. You ask questions and reply to them as if you were having a conversation with yourself. You do not have to say it outloud to bother other people. Just enjoy talking to yourself and say whatever you want by using English words that you know until your tongue is accustomed to saying them. - Get friends
It wouldn't be true to say that none of the students like speaking English. Among hundreds of students at one school, there are still a few who have been practicing by building small circles where they can express themselves in English. Dare yourself to join one of these groups or, at least, find friends who share the same interest. Everyone can be a teacher, including your friends. Remember the idiom, “Birds of a feather flock together. - Listen and Repeat
This one really depends on what you are interested in. If you enjoy listening to music, you can try to listen and repeat the sentences over and over again. If you want to sing it out loud, go ahead. The focus is on pronouncing the words, not building good singing skills in the first place. If you enjoy watching movies, you can try to listen and repeat the dialogues. Imagine you were in the movie and said those sentences. Cool, right?
Try to incorporate the above tips and see how you will make progress. Enjoy every moment and find the fun in learning English.
