For ethnic Chinese, the Chinese New Year is a big day to look forward to. It’s a bright and joyful day, the time of the year where you get together and celebrate with your family. Family gatherings during Chinese New Year are followed by the tradition that completes the excitement of the Chinese New Year, which is giving out angpao (Red Envelope). Those who give angpao are only married people, because they are considered adults. But, what should you do with the money you receive from the angpao? Here are some ideas:
1. Shopping
Of course, shopping is something that comes to mind. Angpao can be considered as an annual self reward. Especially in the celebration of Chinese New Year, where there are lots of Chinese New Year discounts. We can buy things from our wishlist. However, we should still be a wise shopper. It is highly suggested to buy the things we really need and have high durability, or items that can be
invested.
2. Put it in the Emergency Fund
Another way to spend your angpao is by putting it in your emergency fund. We need to anticipate the unexpected especially during the pandemic, due to the lack of economic stability. Emergency funds will help you a lot in the future, for example when there’s an accident and you don’t have enough money to handle the situation.
3. Making angpao crafts
Red envelopes are great materials for craft making. Instead of immediately throwing them in the trash, we can turn them into beautiful pieces that you can display throughout the year. It is a simple way to help the environment.
4. Investing angpao money
Last but not least, we can invest our angpao money even though we’re still teenagers. For example, we can use mutual funds or ‘Reksadana’. Mutual funds are investment instruments or tools that are suitable for novice investors. So basically, we can entrust our angpao money in mutual funds, then invest it to bring profit in return.
